5 Reasons You should Watch the XFL
#5 Transparency
As football fans, we love the game and its intensity. However, the NFL has long been a league that keeps the fans at arms length when anything controversial happens. We are given a prepared statement that gives little insight into how they arrived at their decision. Thus far, the XFL has been very transparent. They allow you to hear the play calls, the review communications and the locker room pep talks. They even go as far as in game interviews with players being asked about a mistake they just made on the field! What is not to love about hearing a player be asked about a fumble on the goal line?
#4 Rules
There are several rule differences between the XFL and NFL. Here are just a few: kickoffs, punts, and point after attempts. Kickoffs are done with the players lined up 5 yards apart with the kicker back as usual. This is done with player safety in mind- taking away the high risk of the play, but allowing the play to still be a fun part of the game. Punts are also made safer by restricting the players release until the punter has made contact with the football. Finally, points after a touchdown are 100% done without a kicker. There are three point options: 1 point attempt done from the 2 yard line, 2 point attempt done from the 5 yard line, and a 3 point attempt done from the 10 yard line. This makes the point after much more interesting and it can have more of an impact on the game- making it a great addition to the sport we love!#3 Coaching
Coaching is important at any level of football. The coaches in the XFL are not chump nobodies, well, some may be, but there are some that you have most likely heard of. Bob Stoops is probably one of the bigger names in the XFL because of his success with the Oklahoma Sooners at the college level. Having quality coaching will only help the on-field product. Which there has been improvement in already in a few short weeks. You can rest assured that the quality of the coaches will continue to improve along with the game play.
#2 Players
Players have maybe the largest role in this reboot league. Without quality football players, why would we even want to watch? The XFL has done a good job of finding quality talent with many having stints with NFL teams. We cannot expect NFL millionaire players to jump across to the XFL and play with the obvious financial constraints of the XFL. So, we must take the XFL for what it is, essentially minor league football. With that said, these players are not beer league type guys. They have played at the collegiate level for some very big programs in many cases. These are great athletes who are in great shape. These athletes are playing their hearts out with hopes of getting an NFL contract. Why wouldn't you want to watch that?
#1 It is FOOTBALL!
College football is a personal favorite of mine. I love nearly everything about the game and the players competing to prove themselves worthy of a draft selection. Its season comes and goes so quickly, though. The NFL is a Sunday ritual in my home, we watch it avidly, but it comes and goes faster than we would like. Most football fans have been begging for more football. The AAF tried to fill that void and failed miserably. The XFL has come in strong and seems poised to last much longer than the AAF. Tune in, watch a game, enjoy the uniqueness the XFL offers. We asked for more football and here it is. It will not replace the NFL, and it will not replace College football tradition and lore, but the XFL will feed the need of more quality football- if you give it the chance. Sure the jerseys are loud and the extra features are new to traditional fans, but it is quality football every weekend for all to enjoy!
